Girl America

Jan Kadlec / Production Designer Notes No.1 / Girl America /Eng.

Our impression of reality is formed by the sum of memories, and memories are continuously updated with convictions about these emotions creating a multi-layered library of memories.

Dreams are not visions of the future, but memories that in the dream world are differently accentuated according to the intensity of an emotional sketch. We consequently arrive at this sketch in the future as if it was another lived memory. So, it’s not a vision of the future, but an image of the future that reality created from memories that in each projected moment become another layer generating new ones in the library of memories.

The seemingly different reality in society is the same because it’s built on a subconsciously agreed upon perception of an experienced event, even if it’s often seen with different emotions by different people. Such a meeting of similar emotions and memories is only a mutual agreement about the fact that a sun-lit landscape must be perceived as something beautiful.

We are created from memories and that’s the place where we exist and reside.

The visual concept of the American Chick film is based on explication of the reality as a collection of memories stored in the images of strong emotions. This gallery of otherwise processed and constant images is in some places enriched by a newly discovered visuality. The sum of the emotions and different perception of memories creates an unbelievable notion of the reality in the world of the film’s heroine.

Each chapter of her life is presented in a different light and different colours. The sourceof these emotional and visual deviations of our world in any specific scene/image is to be explained in the framework of the story.

Green represents memories of her home where Ema’s mother used to cover the black and white TV screen with a green plastic gel cover. It visually influenced her stored memories in a significant way.

Desaturated images of the orphanage are based on the agreement of the visual perception of that time period, because in general the colours were suppressed and oppressed.

The use of red is based on the emotion and image of the discarded red costumes. In Ema’s solitude, the costumes represent her mother. The album of these specific memories and emotions associated with the colour red gradually create a dangerous and differently painful idea of reality in the heroine.

In this film, yellow personifies defiance in a problematic situation. The moment yellow becomes a metaphor for defiance was when Ema’s brother walks out on the mother’s world and leaves behind his yellow T-shirt and a yellow light that was turned on. This means of expression stuck in her memory and is perceived by Ema as a protective shield provided by her brother, as well as a symbol of defiance.

Different perceptions of the otherwise same architecture is caused by the number of stored memories and therefore the ability of a deeper analysis of the perceived reality. What could have been perceived as compact in the past is now, thanks to the excess of information and contradictory emotions, barely stable and vice versa.

Svět zalitý zelenou barvou, zde prezentuje vzpomínky na období domova, kdy Emy matka zakrývala černobílou obrazovku zelenou folií a zásadně tím vizuálně ovlivnila uložené vzpomínky.

Jan Kadlec / Production Designer Notes No.2/ Girl America /Eng.

The story of Girl America (Amerikánka) originated from a real-life event that began in Sarasota, Florida. The version known to the public, however, only draws inspiration from the true story and, for the most part, relocates it into the raw setting of children’s homes, juvenile detention centers and housing estates. The vividly colorful world of America remains only in a longed-for vision one shaped by an imagination marked by socialism and deliberately desaturated. As a result, most of the settings are described as socially troubled.
Our aim was not to reconstruct the social reality of the children’s homes and reform schools of that era an environment from which society, then as now, tends to avert its gaze. Instead, the intention was to understand this fictional character within a framework that defines the film’s visual language.
To shape the film’s visual world, we chose the concept of an adult woman reconstructing her childhood memories. Just as our own memories are stored in fragments, so it is for the film’s characters. Memories are usually anchored in a striking experience or in something that dominates the recollection, perhaps a color, a texture or a scent around which we later search for form. Through these specific triggers we reconstruct the memories piece by piece.
Nothing in this film is mere coincidence, mannerism, or a child’s play with filters. Everything that has been created including the final color grading carries a clear meaning, formulated on the basis of an “anthropology of fictional emotion.” In this sense, the world of the film’s protagonist becomes a kaleidoscope of memories in shifting colors.
Colors
The color yellow conveys the sense of defiance that the protagonist carries from the moment her brother stood up to an injustice. Once she realizes that the image of her brother as a hero was artificially constructed, the encounter with the yellow T-shirt in the free world turns yellow into a symbol of disheartenment. The heroine steps out of the black-and-white world of the revolution because that event is preserved in memory through black-and-white photographs and desaturated video footage into a quasi-colored space dominated by yellow light. This yellow light absorbs all the other colors, creating once again a kind of “black-and-white,” though technically still a colored, world.
Purple defines the world of the director of the children’s home, a woman who dedicated her entire life to the children. In the language of symbolism, purple signifies a person who is always searching for an unknown love.
The director too is a victim of the absence of love, and yet she gives love to the children. The protagonist discovers this only when she returns as an adult through the image of children cutting themselves free from a purple curtain, that is, from the body of the director herself. The director was the only one who truly loved these abandoned children.
Pink, and the “pink knitted” world, describes the act of an artificially constructed family. Under normal circumstances such a mother would probably knit the same sweater for her biologically unrelated children.
Her attempt to create a family is, however, hypocritical, as suggested by her own clothing the only one without any sign of knitting. Pink may appear charming, but at the same time it can seem eerie and intrusive.
The knitted house in the middle of a cornfield, encircled by barbed wire, embodies her fear of loss and her awareness of the absolute fragility of a home created in this artificial way. For the protagonist, it is also a prison, a separation from the dream image of America that she does not, in fact, know something underscored by her escape from the archetype of the American farm.
Negative color post-correction represents a painful memory that the author refuses to bring to light—like finding an undeveloped roll of film in a parents’ chest of drawers. There was probably a reason it was never developed, and so we too will leave it undeveloped.
The Technicolor treatment of the first memories of the children’s home refers back to the time of our own childhood, when photographs carried just such vibrant colors. I do not ask whether this was also true in their case most likely not. These children probably have no experience of color photography. I am trying instead to connect with their feelings and to shape this world so that I can identify with it. It is not a reconstruction, but a visual formulation of an emotion I want to understand as a viewer. Moreover, the deliberate color distortion draws individual hues to the surface and makes this world more playful.
Art in the film Girl America – Amerikánka
My aim was to return public attention to the visual arts and to place art inside the most widely used medium that communicates with the public today film. Not, however, as a prop or as a means of decorating an interior, nor as a mere signal that a character happens to be an art collector. Through the art works included, I wanted to underline the fact that film itself is a visual art, meant to speak through images, and that the objects shown in the film are not decorations but a means of shaping emotion.
A film that runs for roughly 120 minutes needs about 215,754 frames to tell its story, whereas a single work of visual art needs only one such “frame” in which the work itself is contained. This was the guiding concept behind linking these two seemingly different worlds.
The World of Costumes is Shaped by the Following Keys
The yellow T-shirt with the words Rally Team is something the heroine mentally “puts on” as a symbol of defiance. In the reconstructed memory her older brother, wearing exactly this T-shirt, stood up to their mother’s aggression. Thus, for a certain part of the film, yellow represents the color of defiance, and the fictional print the name on the shirt becomes the characteristic emblem of the brother’s “armor,” standing in for the ordinary prints of that time.
The very same print later appears on the pimp’s clothing, but now in an inverted version. At this point the heroine realizes that the long-held image of defiance and uniqueness is in fact just an ordinary brand, something everyone owns. She discovers this only when, as a young woman entering the free world, she sees many such T-shirts in the interior of her future employer. The carefully built phenomenon is thus completely devalued nothing exceptional, merely a common T-shirt worn by anyone. And so the previously indestructible “armor” of her brother slips into ordinariness.
Red, the color that characterized her mother and is linked both to maternal love and to something that caused pain, becomes at a certain point in the story the color of the heroine herself. The character is a “hostage” in the world of prostitution and wears a costume that gives her an air of exclusivity but at the same time limits her mentally and physically.
The mother’s red coat, which the girl puts on at home during her mother’s absence and in which she also symbolically replaces her mother in caring for her younger brother gradually transforms in the reconstruction into a symbol of maternal love, but also into a hint of a not-yet-fully-articulated evil. It is not meant primarily as the color of evil; my aim was not to portray the mother as a perpetrator of wickedness.
The “evil” with which everyone struggles is in fact merely the absence of love. According to my “quasianthropology” of the character, the mother herself probably experienced something that caused her pain. Perhaps her family fell apart and she no longer knew how to function as a mother once the child reached a certain age. And so, every evening, she goes out in search of love that might finally create for her the longed-for world a world she otherwise does not know.
The mother’s apartment is probably inherited from her parents. In the walls of the interior one can trace the remnants of historical furniture that she gradually sold off, replacing it with “future hope” in the form of multicolored costumes. At the same time a special floral wallpaper maintains its own continuity. In the heroine’s reconstructed memory the mother disappears and becomes overgrown in her own world her habitat is entirely consumed by vegetation, gilded trinkets included. Further red accents in her costume are nothing but a chaos in the heroine’s analysis and reconstruction. Is she a positive figure, or a sign of evil?
The character of the director of the children’s home is also visually constructed through my own approach and a fictional analysis. In the heroine’s reconstructed memory the director is, at first, perceived as a strict and even cruel person. Only later in life, when these separate reconstructions can be compared side by side, does the heroine realize that the director was in fact the only person who truly loved them and was willing to give them everything. I expressed this in her world through the color purple. In the symbolism of color, purple signifies a person who longs for a love they have never received. The director, like the children, is therefore abandoned and yearns to be loved. The heroine uncovers this truth only as an adult. I conveyed her realization visually with a purple curtain matching the color of the director’s costume beside which the director stands, and from which the children are gradually “cut out” with scissors. This is not an act of destroying the interior, but a metaphorical image of devotion to these children. It is also an illustration of the evolution of the costume: it is the same garment, but, like the director herself, it has aged and now covers more of the body. Her longing and pain have not changed; they have simply aged with her.
I sought to depict the world of the foster parents as an image of an artificially created family. The story tells us that the second girl is not their biological child either, and so the adoptive mother, with good intentions, tries to create a complete image of a united family. When this cannot logically be built on a biological foundation, she solves it visually much as well-meaning parents try to do everything for their children… sending them to piano lessons, knitting, sports, and so on. When these children look back, they usually see this not as an entirely positive part of their childhood. But it is certainly not evil. This mother would probably, at that time, have tried to connect the children visually by knitting them identical sweaters. This obsessive phenomenon of the era she even projects onto her husband, the adoptive father. She herself, however, wears nothing of the kind something artificial and, on her part, hypocritical. To emphasize this feeling, I defined their world as a “knitted sweater” of a single color one that, in my fictional anthropology of the character, became the dominant hue of that period of life. Pink is undoubtedly sweet, but at the same time brutally aggressive. The entire setting lies in the middle of an endless cornfield and is surrounded by barbed wire. The wire is not there as a prison wall, but as a protection against their fragility. Everything is built to evoke the classic phenomenon of the American countryside, like the farm in the film Interstellar. The girl runs away because she longs for America for a family she has never known; and yet, in truth, she is already “in America,” in a family, all along.
The reconstruction of the memory of the Velvet Revolution and, within that context, the heroine’s first encounter with the general public marks her first contact with freedom. It should be added that the entire costume world of the children from the orphanage is built on the concept of a society that is not fully educated. When V. T. first showed me real photographs of these environments (the social conditions), he added that the children’s fundamental problem was their lack of education. Upon reaching adulthood they enter a free world without knowing its rules. No one has explained anything to them and so they often end up in prostitution and similar paths. I projected this crucial insight into the visual design of the film: their costumes “follow” them, in the way they are worn, well into adulthood. I imagined it as a container of spilled clothing from which the children pick individual pieces according to need, and above all according to the identity they feel in that moment. One might put a coat over the head, another might wear trousers on the arms, and so on. It is a formulation of character without the influence of the original context of the garment.
When they later enter the world of prostitution, they approach it with the same perspective: they recognize that underwear carries the essence of eroticism the appeal of selling themselves and so they wear it as the outer layer of their otherwise layered costume. On closer analysis you can see that nothing they acquired on their journey of “education” is ever truly taken off. The figure in the black-and-white photograph therefore still wears the previous costume the unified outfit that defines the emotion of the Velvet Revolution.
I myself do not believe in the local society’s positive emotion. I define their shared, momentary euphoria with a sports jersey that, instead of a player’s name and number, carries a word and a number significant for recent history yet otherwise is entirely interchangeable. I expressed the world of the Velvet Revolution as a black-and-white space set in a contemporary corporate office, in the style of the film The Wolf of Wall Street. It is both a message and a question: is this really the freedom that society so desperately desired? Here the black-and-white image is not an aesthetic affectation, but a reconstruction of the memory of the event an event recorded most often in black-and-white photographs or in desaturated video footage. The screenplay describes this part as a faithful reconstruction of a well-known location: the girls arrive in Prague by train and walk to Národní třída, where they encounter the Public Security forces (VB); they flee to hide in a nearby house, where one girl puts on a missing shoe, and then they meet a pimp in one of the apartments. Immediately afterward comes a scene in which the girls enter the world the habitat of another child, the pimp. This scene is in color, yet it is completely flooded with yellow. Yellow, the only color present in the space, absorbs all the others, creating once again a kind of black-and-white world though technically still in color.
Kulová, portrayed by Zuzana Mauréry, appears as a helper, a caregiver, and at the same time the person responsible for the technical operation of the children’s home. Her character also struggles with alcoholism. For this reason I defined her costume as a blend of a work uniform, a hand-knitted sweater (in a similar context as the foster family), and finally as her own skin onto which the devastation of alcohol is visibly inscribed. Her son stands out among the children with knitted accessories in the same shade of orange. And finally there is the figure of the husband, who is completely wrapped in knitted clothing, including his face. This is my way of “formulating” a mistake in the script: in the original versions the husband had a relatively large role, but with each rewrite his significance faded until it disappeared altogether yet the character remained. So I defined him as someone who exists, but in truth does not.
And finally, the music including the film’s final visual treatment is not merely an attempt to be “more international.” It represents an extension of my profession into the creation of these worlds as well, for they too carry meaning.
For example, the negative image is a formulation of a painful memory the author refuses to develop like finding an undeveloped roll of film in a parents’ chest of drawers. There was probably a reason it was never developed, and so we will not develop it either.
Or the black-and-white world of the Revolution, which I have already mentioned in the context of costume, is a reconstruction of the feeling of the Velvet Revolution. It is usually preserved either in black-and-white photographs or in desaturated video footage and at the same time it sends a message to the present day.
This particular world is described as a vast corporate office, dominated by my visual object called Monument. As an artefact it speaks of the indelible scars of our society and is surrounded by 350 children wearing sports jerseys with a shouted slogan across their backs. For me this is the single image in which this society meets emotionally.
The Technicolor world of the past the first part of the reconstructed memory of the children’s home is defined by the color palette of photographs from that era. It is true that this palette did not exist in their real world, but it lives in my own memory of childhood, preserved in such photographs and in Polaroid snapshots. A Polaroid look would have been too far removed from the context, so I chose classic Technicolor instead. Moreover, this deliberate “color devastation” accentuates individual hues and separates them from the rest, thus underscoring her way of analysing that period of life.
The purple filter that envelops the entire interior of the children’s home logically arises from the costume of the most important figure of this stage of life. The director for the reasons already mentioned loved purple (based on the fictional anthropology of the character), and through the reconstruction the protagonist defined her absolute presence in every part of the building. This color gradually fades: Ema becomes aware of its true meaning. The interior’s color thus separates from the figure of the director and, like the children themselves, becomes only a monochrome world without an embedded story. The children wear the same costumes, but their original colors have disappeared. Ema realizes that they clearly share the same fate, but because she does not know their individual characters, she cannot, in her reconstruction of memory, add color to them. She leaves them as part of the main dominant element: the building of the children’s home itself.
The color-parched period of memory the most difficult part of her life also serves for us as the seemingly basic temporal platform for the reconstruction. It is a visual “overexposure,” probably as intense as her inner strain. It is the decision to remain in a cyclical problem, or to give up all personal context and even abandon her only existing identity. The opening world of her home is presented in full color, because at that point none of the depicted colors yet carries either negative or positive connotations.
For me, the final scene is the culmination of this visual formulation, because I turned completely away from the setting described in the script and pursued solely the artistic form of depicting the apartment of a woman who has apparently reached the conclusion of her analysis of memories. I believe that when she realized the place that held the greatest meaning in her life the children’s home she probably found an apartment somewhere in its immediate vicinity. The only “immediate vicinity” in the film’s visual language is a tram stop, so I transformed the world of the stop into an apartment and linked it to the film’s ongoing storyline in the form of railway tracks.
And finally, the music far from being a triumphant cry of “here we are”—is instead a sonic image describing the longing for freedom and a spectacle full of imagination. From history to the present day, and especially in our context of films from the 1970s to the 1990s, Italian culture and music have represented for our society a distant harbor of freedom to which it looked with admiration.

Jan Kadlec / Production Designer Notes No.2/ Amerikánka /Cz.

Růžová barva a „růžově pletený“ svět popisují akt uměle vytvářené rodiny.

Dívka utíká, protože chce do Ameriky k rodině, kterou nikdy nepoznala; a přitom je vlastně „v Americe“, v rodině, už dávno.
The Wolf of Wall Street.
