“Childhoods” (Damství) in Bechyně has opened the 2025 exhibition season.

The emblem of this year’s season at Bechyně Castle, in the park high above the confluence of the Lužnice and Smutná rivers, is a pig on a ski-jump ramp – a sculpture by Jan Kadlec from 2003. Winner of the Czech Lion Award for Production Design and the Czech Film Critics’ Award for Artistic Achievement for the film Girl America (Amerikánka) directed by Viktor Tauš, Kadlec explains the meaning of the simply titled piece Pig: “The term pig has long been used for corrupt politicians in high places. The pig on the ski-jump symbolizes the resolve and attempt to rise out of the highest spheres of social mire to take the step necessary for confession. The confrontation of the animal and the ramp speaks to the impossibility of such a step.”

Modern and contemporary art suits Bechyně Castle perfectly. Its present-day owner Josef Štáva has been collecting art since the 1970s, when he began during his Swiss exile. When he acquired the castle in the 1990s and gradually began restoring it and opening it to the public, it was only natural that his art collection would find a permanent home there.
