The exhibition project titled “Sources of a New Style” is another event organized by the ARTLAB Gallery Association, which continues to seek new contexts and perspectives on contemporary fine and visual art.

While the previous project, “The Nineties / 99CZ,” was a kind of retrospective glance at the past ten years of Czech art, featuring the vast majority of artists who are now considered established figures — this new exhibition takes the opposite approach. “Sources of a New Style” presents artists of the emerging generation, recent graduates and current students of art academies. The subject of this exhibition is not their artistic work itself, but rather what is connected to it their toys.

It is not easy to find a common denominator among the works of today’s young artists. One could say that artists of the late 1990s have lost the need to adopt a specific, up-to-the-minute artistic style and build their image around it. Unlike the generation of the early 1990s, which unmistakably aligned itself with the phenomenon of installation art, the most radical yet least publicly accepted artistic form the output of these younger artists lacks that arrogance of form. A similar shift can also be seen in their choice of themes. By the end of the 1990s, young visual artists had moved away from grand, often Western-inspired topics such as AIDS, homosexuality, and feminism, and instead began telling simpler, perhaps less exciting but certainly more ordinary stories. Newly adult artists and architects are reflecting on their period of adolescence, and in their attempt to rediscover their most original sensory experiences, they are returning to childhood. Only time and confrontation with a broader audience, will show which of the graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts (AVU), the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (VŠUP), the Czech Technical University (ČVUT), and other institutions will strike a “gold vein” hidden deep in the 1970s and manage to mine it successfully. Yet this fact changes nothing about the simple truth that in many homes, old toys remain hidden, silent witnesses of those unspoiled, pre-educated years.

The exhibition “Sources of a New Style” presents a fascinating collection of toys, the very ones that almost everyone who grew up in the strong 1970s generations once played with. These toys are not only linked to the featured artists and architects, whose works are inspired by memories and sensations from that time, but also to an entire generation. Thus, the exhibition has the potential to become a platform where socially diverse individuals of one generation can meet – after all, everyone likes to return to their childhood.

The exhibition takes place in the Riding Hall of Prague Castle from June 21 to August 27, 2000, open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Mondays.
