Jan Kadlec (born 1976) is a visual artist, architect and stage designer who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, in the sculpture studios of Prof. Hugo Demartini and Prof. Jindřich Zeithamml, and graduated from the Studio of Visual Communication of Prof. Jiří David. With his visionary installations he dazzled the Czech art scene of the 1990s, later drawing on these experiences as a film and stage designer and also as a production designer. He currently lives between Prague and Lugano, Switzerland. In his works he explores the expressive potential of contemporary art and, in a lightly ironic yet accessible language, engages with the symbolic stories of today’s society. A broader theme of his practice is the effort to formulate the lived and emerging visual identity of the world, based on the belief that our thinking, perception and decision-making are shaped daily above all by media images. Kadlec exposes their frequent banality and transforms it into works that raise the question of whether art still serves as an active mirror of our present. Jan Kadlec is the recent recipient of two Czech Lion Awards, which he received for his work on costumes and scenography for the new Czech film Girl America (Amerikánka) (2024). The film also featured a monumental sculpture that was presented for the first time this year in Klatovy, in the form of a solo exhibition in the Church of St. Lawrence.
