What is Czech art like in the final decade of the 20th century? You might find an answer to this question at the exhibitions that are part of an event organized by the Prague association ARTLAB. The project presents fifty visual artists who focus mainly on installations and spatial objects. But beware: you won’t find these exhibitions in galleries as usual. Instead, they take place in public spaces throughout Prague! The organizers: Jan Kadlec, Jiří David, and Milan Salák, aim to bring art even closer to everyday people. The main exhibition is held in the now-abandoned premises of the former weekly Telegraf. Alongside works by Stanislav Kolíbal, František Skála, and Ivan Kafka, you’ll see a monumental inflatable object titled Malibu by Kateřina Vincourová, as well as four new sculptures by Milan Knížák, representing mysterious mutants. Most of the accompanying events can be found near Wenceslas Square. Right on the square, you’ll come across red telephone booths created by the art collective Silver – when you step inside, they bombard you with questions and provocations such as, “What kind of love do you share with your partner?” In the newly renovated hall of the Main Post Office on Jindřišská Street, David Černý has prepared a surprise in the form of large sculptures. In the Lucerna underground passage, young artist Vilém Kabzan invites you to an unusual party. Even the National Museum hasn’t remained untouched Jiří David has built a giant aquarium filled with snails whose shells are wrapped with colorful cotton threads; as they move, they slowly “weave” an abstract three-dimensional pattern. Other accompanying events can be found at Vyšehrad Station or at the Roxy Club, where artist Krištof Kintera has opened a new gallery and is hosting an exhibition titled Visions.

All exhibitions under the 99CZ banner run from September 23 to November 10. 1999
